Gas Company Tower

Designed by Richard Keating of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, The Gas
Company Tower is one of the most unique buildings in the DTLA skyline.
Offering over 1.3 million net rentable square feet, the tower was completed
in 1991 as the second building in the Library Square Redevelopment Project
(US Bank Tower is the other). 50 Stories tall, this tower is a rare example
of a building designed to suit its anchor tenant, Southern California
Gas Company. Its form rises up in layers meant to evoke the image of the
blue flame, a trademarked symbol of Southern California Gas Company. The
symbol permeates throughout the entire building in wall sconces and chandeliers.
Visitors and tenants will be amazed by Frank Stella’s
mural Dusk which
is painted on an adjacent building and is one of the world’s largest murals, running
the length of an entire city block. The Gas Company Tower has won many awards
including the 1992 Merit Award by the Californian Council of the American
Institute of Architects and the 1994 Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce
Beautification Award for a new commercial high rise and public use interior
space. Tenants of the tower will enjoy its proximity to a plethora of eating
establishments such as Water Grill and Café Pinot
as well as convenient access to many retail shops as well as access to many
nearby freeways.
